This stunning 19th century Farmhouse in Hurst, Berkshire has undergone a dramatic transformation from a dark Gothic building to a beautifully stylish home with this sympathetic update by Thames Valley Windows.
The original property featured timber windows that were about 20 years old. The windows were small and poorly fitted, and not particularly suited to the building. They featured leaded panes and unnecessary fanlights and were painted black on both sides, making the property feel very dark and oppressive.
There was also a problem with water ingress around some of the windows in the upstairs of the property where the windows had been poorly fitted. Rain water was leaking through, leading to large damp patches on the walls in a couple of the bedrooms.
After visiting the showroom of local based experts Thames Valley Windows, and with the help of their 3D visualisation software, the property owners made the decision to opt for Evolution wood effect windows and French doors.
The owners commented “We were very keen on the 3D Visualisation service offered by Thames Valley Windows, as we were considering a move away from the black windows and the leaded panes, but were unsure as to what would work best.
They came up with multiple options in black, grey and white, with both leaded windows and different Astragal bar configurations. In total we were presented with over 20 different visualisations!”
I also needed to manage the owners expectations about window frame thicknesses – the 80’s window design that they had in the existing timber windows were actually quite a slim design, which was popular for that period, but have now gone completely out of fashion.”
Paul added “They were concerned that the thicker mullions on the Evolution windows would look odd, but I took them through the process of how this style of window was actually more in keeping with the character of the property, and with our redesign of the windows would still let in more light than the current designs”
Thames Valley Windows fitted 28 Evolution windows throughout the property. Stormproof windows in wood effect white finish, with handcrafted Georgian bars, were selected to maintain the traditional look of the property.
Thames Valley Window Company designed, surveyed and managed the project from beginning to end. They are a family run business with 35 years experience, specialising in architectural design and surveying, project management and installation of doors and windows.
