During the 20s and 30s, the traditional front door would usually be painted in a dark colour since as green or black. Many, however, had contrasting painted panels that would be paired with stylish cast iron door furniture. There were two main styles of door that were popular during this era – "Streamline Moderne" and "Art Deco". 

During the 1920s, Art Deco first emerged, however it really hit its peak during the following decade thanks to its new, fresh, decorative and modern look. The Art Deco style is characterised by geometric, bold shapes, lavish ornamentation and rich colours.

In the late 1930s, the Streamline Modern style became popular. Similar to Art Deco, this type of door had familiar architectural elements including chrome hardware, curving forms, horizontal long lines and porthole windows. This type of door was usually painted in a more subdued or lighter colour, with colourful, geometric, large glass designs being incorporated into their structure.

Recreating the Look Today

1920s and 1930s front doors were made from timber; however, timber isn’t the best choice today. Timber doors are draughty and aren’t as secure as other types of modern door like composite or uPVC.
